Lyle Lovett, Lyle Lovett & His Large Band

This album sounds like the strange band that played at the wedding of your slightly-uncomfortable friends.

Even though it seems as though Lyle Lovett's Large Band is, in fact, made up of actual instruments, they sound suspiciously like keyboard effects on certain songs, especially the beginning of "Stand By Your Man."  Lyle conjures up some folk, gospel, and jazz influences, which made this one of the few — and maybe the first — country albums I own.  Back when I used to listen to it more frequently, I really only listened to three songs: "Here I Am," "Nobody Knows Me," and "Once is Enough."  The first and last are still fun, particularly the last.  Otherwise — well, there's something odd and vaguely bemused about Lyle Lovett's face, as though he's playing something and wonders if you're in on the joke.  And I guess I'm not sure if I am.
